The Ethics of A.I.

Is it ethical to develop AI past the point of consciousness? The ability of AI being self-regulating, intelligent machines to preserve human life by going where we cannot safely go, from inside nuclear reactors to mines to deep space seems like an interesting notion. However, if improperly managed, AI could have serious unintended consequence, including, possibly, the end of the human race.

To begin untangling this moral skein, and possibly sketch a path toward policies that could help guide our path, we will be talking to experts about the implications of AI research and our obligations as human developers.

Guests

Stuart Russell

Stuart Russell is a professor (and formerly chair) of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at University of California at Berkeley. His book Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach (co-written with Peter Norvig) is the standard text in AI; it has been translated into 13 languages and is used in more than 1,300 universities in 118 different countries.

Fei-Fei Li

Fei-Fei Li is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University and the director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab (SAIL). Li’s work with neural networks and computer vision (with Stanford’s Vision Lab) marks a significant step forward for AI research, and could lead to applications ranging from more intuitive image searches to robots able to make autonomous decisions in unfamiliar situations.
